[Passport] 1984 Passport 42 pilothouse cutter & light air

Wed, 05/19/2010 - 13:00
hi,
i just recently purchased a 1984 passport 42 in the san fransisco bay
area. it is the pilot house version and according to the owner was a
factory option, but the only pilothouse ever built. so my first
question for the group is whether this is true? i am moving the boat
to san diiego at the end of the month and would like to know how the

[Passport] Hand rails / Cap rail / Varnishing

Wed, 05/19/2010 - 13:00
All,

I am tired of varnishing every 5 months. it really sucks. I saw a Hylas
recently who left his cap rail and hand rails unvarnished and the teak was
happy that way.

I was wondering if anyone has left his Hand Rails and Cap Rail lose their
varnish over time and kept them "natural" and how that worked out.

i have a similar set up but i always leave the pump on auto since a properly adjusted stuffing box will be a source of the salt water drip unless you have the dripless gland. given the amount of oil a perkins leaks, i use the oil "diapers" under the engine and buy in bulk from [link].

No, but my wife did take a picture of my butt when I got stuck in that damn
little door trying to get the pump out.....you don't want to see it, trust
me.

I keep hearing about these Bilge Pump issues, and I seem to have none, so I
figured I'd share my super simple setup with you all.

I have a Rule 3700 Pump down there with a normal Float switch. Both are
mounted on a half inch board that sits in the bottom of the bilge and avoids
the biggest pieces going into the pump or jamming the float switch. The

I've tried several methods to pump the bilge.

I started with a Parmax 4 pump mounted high in the engine cabinet, with a float switch.  Hated it. The pump bladders tired often and, I tired of buying rebuild kits.  I switched to Shurflo manifold pumps, but had the same problem.  I then added a secondary self-contained pump in the bottom of the sump,  thinking this would give the big pump a break, but the manifolds dried out.  Grrr.

[Passport] Low RPM vibration

Wed, 05/19/2010 - 00:00
The split-tube idea is excellent. I can retrofit that to the wiring fairly easily.

The smaller wires can fit inside the binnacle guard tubes, especially if I make the exit holes a tiny bit larger. The larger cables (radar, sounders-2 of them) can then go up the binnacle tube through your split-tube arrangement.

RE: [Passport] Low RPM vibration

I have gotten all wires (except for radar since I did not replace the radar)
up both sides of the Edson stainless steel tube pedestal guard. from there,
drilled the smallest holes possible in the tube to allow the wires to exit
to the chart plotter and instruments.

Hi,

Alas, no barnacles up here. Good advice on motor mounts, though, and I'll check them. We pull her for bottom painting in a bit anyway, so we've planned to replace the cutlass. It's old, for sure, and could easily be the culprit. Nigel Calder says just a 1/8 inch of play is cause for replacement.

Bill: Be sure to carefully check the rear motor mounts as well as the
cutlass bearing. Could also be just a lot of barnacles on the prop (hope
so).
Regarding the binnacle wires, we have cable tied them all together in a
way so they can't flop around. Seems to work.

[Passport] Signet covers

I just found 2 almost-new Signet instrument covers. They're squarish, about 10 in or so. Anybody need them?

[Passport] Low RPM vibration

Tue, 05/18/2010 - 17:00
Hello,

We have a low RPM vibration in our prop shaft. We're going to haul it anyway, but I'd like some things to check. The vibration seems to fade away at higher RPM.

Can this be a cutlass that needs repair? We have a PYI dripless and wondered if, somehow, that could be the culprit. We have a 3-blade MaxProp on her, too.

[Passport] Wires in binnacle

Tue, 05/18/2010 - 14:20
Hello,

I'm in a quandary with my binnacle. I have a lot of wires and such that need to go up the binnacle and there's not enough space for them. The Edson people say that there shouldn't be any wires up the central tube, but that's where I've got several now.

What do you guys do to get wires from below the cockpit to the binnacle top? All my ideas involve drilling more holes in the cockpit sole and that's not my first choice. I already have a radar cable, sounder cable, and some other smaller cables to go up the binnacle top for some new instruments.

[Passport] Cockpit and Head Shower systems

Tue, 05/18/2010 - 13:40
Hi all,

the faucets for my Cockpit shower are not closing 100% anymore which means
that I have a small leak making the fresh water pressure pump run every
5-10min. Thus I am looking at my options.

Option 1) replace the whole unit, which requires me to find a matching
cut-out size faucet system.

Does anyone have any pictures of their bilge pump setups (while I look
into the amphetamine/manual pump thing...)?

RE: [Passport] Re: bilge pumps

The cheapest, easiest, higher capacity, engine driven pump is a bronze Y
valve connected to the engine raw water intake which can be shut and the
other branch is connected to a similar sized hose to the bottom of the
bilge. This set up doesn't need any maintenance. As long as the engine runs,
it probably will last longer than me or my first mate with the manual pump.

Re: [Passport] Re: bilge pumps

I like the idea of the smaller diameter hose for the deep bilge pump. And Michael is right - in all setups w/o a check valve the volume of return water is the volume up to the top of the vented loop. Be careful about shared thru hulls though. They can act as a back siphon too easily.
As for the "big" backup pump, I think a little analysis of "big" needs to be done. In all the discussions of "big" leaks that I've read, the message has been that NONE of the electric pumps are adequate. You need a clutch linked, motor driven pump, or better yet, a terrorized 1st mate with a bucket. On Wind Witch we have an Edson high capacity mechanical pump mounted on a board with 4" fire hoses on intake and outlet. One gallon/stroke! It is so big it has to sit out on the cabin sole when used or, better, mounts across the cockpit seats forward of the pedestal. The intake hose reaches into the bilge, the outlet hose goes over the side. Big bronze sucker. Doesn't corrode, etc. I am told you don't need an intake strainer, but I still have one - big & heavy. The other embellishment for "big" leaks is a bottle of amphetamines for the 1st mate as motivation to use the bucket and the helmsman to use the autopilot to steer while manning the Edson.

Yes to the vented loop. I have so many darned through hulls, I may simply
find one to share.... Maybe a sea chest.
